Granny’s Birth Initiative
Carrying on the legacy of the Granny Midwives so Black and brown families have a safe, supported birth.
Granny's Birth Initiative supports families through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum months, with a focus on those the healthcare system too often overlooks. Its work centers on carrying on the legacy of the Granny Midwives and ensuring Black and brown birthing people have a safe, supported place to give birth, especially those navigating incarceration, housing instability, a lack of family support, or the child welfare system. Granny's Birth Initiative came to us through the Reconstruct Challenge, winning our 2023 Maternal and Child Health challenge with a Phase 1 and a Phase 2 grant.

Why we backed them
The United States has a Black infant and maternal health crisis. Black mothers and babies face far higher risks, and the causes are rooted in gaps in access, trust, and support rather than in the mothers themselves. For families also managing incarceration, unstable housing, or child welfare involvement, the risks compound and the support thins out at exactly the moment it matters most. Granny's Birth Initiative meets that need with practical, relational care that treats every mother with dignity. This is close to the heart of what we believe: that flourishing begins with the most vulnerable, and that a healthy start in life is one of the clearest expressions of a community that works for everyone. Backing Granny's is a way to put that conviction into action, right in our own city.
From the Reconstruct Challenge to real impact
Granny's Birth Initiative is another example of our innovation work paying off. Through the Reconstruct Challenge, we help organizations test and prove ideas that expand access and improve outcomes, then back the ones that work with follow-on funding. Granny's won our 2023 Maternal and Child Health challenge and received support across two phases, which helped it build out programs and open a permanent home for its work. Along the way it earned Louisville's first maternal health grant for its Doula Dash rideshare program, a sign of how quickly its model has gained traction with the city and other funders.
What Granny's Birth Initiative does
Doula Dash: transportation to maternal support and appointments at little to no cost, removing one of the most common barriers to care.
The Maternity Pantry and Maternity Donation Drive: essential goods for families, including the items a baby needs to come home from or avoid entering the child welfare system.
Milk on the Move (M.O.M.): support that helps displaced mothers safely feed and nourish their infants.
Granny's H.U.B. (Holistic United Birth Support): a physical home for the pantry and a space where mothers can find resources, support, and community.
The Annual Black Maternal Health Fair: a gathering that connects families with Black-owned businesses and community resources.
Why it matters to us
Granny's Birth Initiative confronts one of the most urgent injustices in health, and it does so with warmth, dignity, and deep roots in the community it serves. Helping launch and grow it through the Reconstruct Challenge is one of the ways we put philanthropic capital to work as risk capital, funding solutions that are impactful, scalable, and enduring, and that help the most vulnerable among us flourish.
