Rescuing good food that would be wasted and turning it into beautiful meals for neighbors who need them.
Feed Louisville is a team of professional chefs on a mission to solve two problems at once. Every day, hunger is a crisis for people in the community. Every day, perfectly good food is thrown into the landfill. Feed Louisville sits at the intersection of the two, rescuing overproduced food from restaurants, bakeries, caterers, and farmers, and using it to cook meals for the city's unhoused and food-insecure neighbors. Feed Louisville came to us through the Reconstruct Challenge, winning our Food Justice challenge with a Phase 1 and a Phase 2 grant.

Why we backed them
Food is a basic human need, and Feed Louisville treats it as a basic human right. What sets the organization apart is not only what it does but how it does it: in solidarity, not charity, working alongside the people it serves rather than above them. That posture matches something we hold deeply, that people are not projects, and that dignity belongs to every person regardless of circumstance. Feed Louisville is also a model of stewardship. It takes food that would have been wasted and turns it into nourishment, meeting a human need while reducing waste. That combination of care for people and care for creation, grounded in racial and health equity, is exactly the kind of work we want to help launch and grow.
From the Reconstruct Challenge to real impact
Feed Louisville is another example of our innovation work paying off. Through the Reconstruct Challenge, we help organizations test and prove ideas that expand access and improve outcomes, then back the ones that work with follow-on support. Feed Louisville won our Food Justice challenge and received grants across two phases, which helped it grow its kitchen and expand both its food rescue and hunger relief operations. Its chef-led, dignity-first model has since become a fixture of the city's response to hunger and homelessness.

Why it matters to us
Feed Louisville turns waste into nourishment and charity into solidarity, feeding neighbors with dignity while healing a broken piece of the food system. Helping launch and grow it through the Reconstruct Challenge is one of the ways we put philanthropic capital to work as risk capital for solutions that are impactful, scalable, and enduring, right here in our own city.
