CreativeMornings Louisville
A free monthly gathering that gave Louisville's creative community a place to belong.
CreativeMornings is the world's largest face-to-face creative community with free monthly breakfast talks held in cities around the globe. We founded, funded, and anchored the Louisville chapter, launching it in 2015 as a natural outgrowth of our creative-economy work in Shelby Park. What began as a way to find and connect the city's creatives became one of the most beloved recurring events in Louisville.
Why we built it
Our mural work in Shelby Park kept surfacing the same problem: Louisville was full of creative talent, but there was no easy way for creatives to find one another. So we set out to build the opposite: something free, monthly, and radically welcoming. We believe creativity is integral to a city's flourishing, and that a thriving creative economy lifts the neighborhoods and people around it. CreativeMornings was our way of investing in that and not with a grant to someone else, but by founding and carrying the thing ourselves. We provided the seed funding, resourced staff to run it, and served as its fiscal sponsor so it could grow.
Our role: Founder, funder, and anchor (fiscal sponsor)
Type: Creative-community program that is a monthly breakfast lecture series
Focus: Connecting, inspiring, and mobilizing Louisville's creatives
What it became
CreativeMornings Louisville struck a nerve. Every month, a new speaker, a global theme, coffee and breakfast, and a room where a college student might sit next to a CEO and with cost removed as a barrier so anyone could belong.
Tickets were free, yet each month's 300+ seats sold out within about 15 minutes of release.
Attendance grew 178% from 2015 to 2019.
At its peak it became the #3 best-attended CreativeMornings chapter in the world which is remarkable for a city Louisville's size, alongside chapters in far larger global cities.
More than the numbers, it created a place, a dependable, monthly home for connection, inspiration, and belonging that simply hadn't existed before. It gave Louisville's creative community an identity and each other.
Why it matters to us
CreativeMornings is one of our clearest examples of building community as an act of investment. It reflects our conviction that flourishing is communal and that people need not just opportunity but belonging, and that beauty, creativity, and gathering are real economic and civic goods. By founding, funding, and anchoring it, we helped turn a scattered set of talented individuals into a community that has enriched the whole city.
